In this week’s Gays of Our Lives….

  • River City says farewell to its longtime gay as Robbie Fraser exits the show after 9 years.  Was his goodbye a worthy one?
  • Shortland Street has four gay men leading story this week.  But is it good story?  It’s a mixed bag to say the least.
  • The Man in The Orange Shirt presents the second of its two part story.   And we quickly learn why the first part is the superior one.
  • As Robert grows more evil on Emmerdale, Aaron is more concerned about his ex-lover’s shady behavior.   Will Robert’s actions ruin any chance for a reunion?
  • Ben has a new story arc on EastEnders as Phil finds new ways to humiliate his gay son.  Some things never change.

All this — and more!

PICKS AND PANS

Days of Our Lives (U.S.)

This murder mystery is still boring.  The new writing team really should have ended it quickly instead of dragging it out.  It’s just so tedious.  And the flashbacks are poorly done.   The only thing that got my attention this past week was Paul’s nipples poking through his blue shirt.  That’s not a good thing.

Emmerdale  (U.K.)

Amazing how easily manipulated these people are by Robert after everything he’s done to them.  But I guess his plans can’t work if they don’t keep falling for it.  Though for the characters to keep being so gullible is bad writing.

I don’t mind scheming Robert, but the thing is it won’t last.  Because he can’t be ‘evil’ and be with Aaron at the same time.  The show writes it that Robert is only bad when he can’t have Aaron.  But Aaron being a check on Robert’s darker side has proven to be boring.  And it will be again.  Why can’t we have both?   Also, can’t Robert be bad without trying to kill folks or risking people’s lives?  That’s the problem I had with him before.  There are some things that, as a viewer, I can’t get past.

Aaron looked actually annoyed and put out that Robert wasn’t begging him to take him back.  Just means he will eventually.

Why does Aaron get to live in the house and Robert has to leave?   Didn’t he and Robert buy the house together?  Or did Aaron use the money from his father to play for it?

Aaron still needs a story, something to occupy his time other than drinking with Adam.  Maybe a new man?  That would be fun.

I know that Lawrence is on his way out of the show, but couldn’t they just have Ronnie make a quick return so they could go off and have a happy ending?   Lawrence may not deserve it, but Ronnie sure does.  Oh well, I’m sure Lawrence will probably be killed off, which is so predictable.

Neighbours  (Australia)

I like that the show is letting Aaron and David have this bit of happiness after months of them working to get together.  I love how in all of their scenes they can’t seem to stop touching each other.  That’s very real and romantic in new relationships.  But I don’t need them to be happy for too long.  That’s just not soapy!

River City  (Scotland)

So… that’s Robbie’s exit?  Well, it was all rather non-dramatic and sudden after everything that’s happened on the last few months.   And Robbie hasn’t been a hairdresser in maybe a good year but he gets a job as a hairdresser for celebrities?   Sure.

I know it was the actor’s decision to leave after being on the show for 9 years and who could blame him?  There wasn’t much left for Robbie to do.  I never really cared for the character and I was completely bored with him after Will left.   I hated his dull relationship with Gary and his relationship with Stevie, who he had no business being with, reeked of them being the only two gay men in town (which, thankfully, another character actually pointed out).

Worst of all, after the long running story of Robbie’s drug addiction, the show in the end dropped the whole plot, I’m guessing because the actor was leaving.  But they could have at least have wrapped it up somehow after Robbie’s overdose.  But in the end I agree with the character (and the actor) it was time for him to move on.

The actor hinted in his exit interview the show will bring on a new gay character and I have no doubt they will.  River City has always had gays in lead stories.  I look forward to whoever it’s going to be.

  • On People of the Valley, Iolo and Tyler finally decide to have a baby and they get a offer from their pal Kelly to carry a child for them.  Will they agree?
  • Todd and Billy want to play daddy to pre-teen Summer on Coronation Street, but Summer’s homophobe grandma has something to say about it.  Todd, however, has a scheme that could solve their problem… or make things worse.
  • Andrew just had a baby with his wife on RedWater, but all he can think about is his incestuous love for his cousin Keiron.  Is Andrew ready to leave his family behind for who he really loves?
  • Johnny gets a lesson in gay history on EastEnders, but has the show forgotten it’s own history?
  • Drugs and parties are becoming a habit for Jack on Shortland Street and when Jack’s boyfriend Charlie wants up the ante and add a third to their relationship, will Jack go for it?

All this and more!

Coronation Street  (U.K.)

How convenient that Todd is so quickly turned around on raising Summer.  But I guess it’s to be expected.  The show said they’d get the kid and I’m curious to see how it comes about at this point.  Unless Drew legally spelled out somewhere that Billy and Todd were to take the girl, they don’t have much legal standing and even then the grandma would probably sue for custody.  I’m still not sold on this story.  I just think there are so many other stories for Todd and Billy or any gay couple for that matter, that don’t involve children.

EastEnders  (U.K.)

I get what the show was trying to do with Johnny and Derek, but they went about it all wrong.  Derek doesn’t know Johnny and he had no right to attack Johnny like that.  What was Johnny supposed to do?  Make a bad situation about ten times worse?  I know the show wanted to inform the viewers what the elder gays went through but it came off as preachy.

And since when did Mick tell Johnny to walk away from anything?  He’s always taught his kids to fight for what they believe in.  That whole bit seemed to be written for the story they are telling today not the history of the show.

And even though Ben was around, through out all of Johnny and Derek’s interactions Johnny never mentioned that gays still have it tough in some respects and that a friend of his was brutally murdered by gay bashers?

Is this the start of an actual story for Johnny?  He’s been on the show for over a year now and still nothing.  Let’s hope the show’s new regime changes that.  I like Ben realizing it’s time he move on with his life.  He’s young, Paul has been dead for a while.  And like Johnny, Ben needs a story.  I’d like to see something for Derek too, as long as I’m asking.

Why does Johnny always look startled?  And could somebody dress this boy?  He dresses like he’s middle aged, not a twenty-something.

Holby City  (U.K.)

So the show basically told us this past week that Dom and Lofty will get together, but they’ll have a long, slow burn of a romance.  I’m okay with that.  Dom doesn’t need to rush into anything so soon after Isaac.  I think they’ll be really sweet together though, their scenes together so far are quite lovely.    Besides, only someone who thought of you in ‘that way’, even if they hadn’t realized it yet, would be so thoughtful to do what Lofty did for Dom with the puzzle.  That bit when they shared during that awkward hug after Dom apologized to Lofty was cute.

Neighbours  (Australia)

I did like Aaron saying ‘this sucks for everyone’ to Tom about the romantic dilemma they were all in.  That was a very real moment.  But the hug and David seeing it was so contrived.  I’m glad Aaron told David off for assuming the worst of him (again).

Like Aaron pointed out, he’s a ‘what you see is what you get’ kind of guy.  David should know that by now.  I’m ready for the misunderstandings between Aaron and David to come to an end though.  It’s time to put them together and give them some couple drama to deal with.

I suspect that Aaron and Mishti will wind up buying the gym.  I think it’s the perfect business for Aaron.  It’s long past time he had some success in that department.

  • Hollyoaks tackles the relevant issue of suicide among the gay community.  But did they take the right angle?

All this — and more!

PICKS AND PANS

Coronation Street (U.K.)

Todd looked yummy in those tight jeans, coming and going.

I’ve said from the start that I didn’t like this storyline and I still don’t.  I think it was awful for Billy to tell Drew they’d take Summer without discussing it with Todd.  It’s unfair and wrong.  And if I were Todd I’d be gone.  What I really hate about this story is the undercurrent that Todd is selfish for not wanting to take in a child he has no ties to.  Why should he?  What’s wrong with people just not wanting children no matter who they are?

And we know how this is going to turn out.  The girl will come and live with Todd and Billy, they’ll have some bumps and bruises, but they’ll turn out to be a happy family.   I’m sure we’ll get dialogue from Todd like: ‘what was wrong with me?  How could I ever not want to be a father?’   Blech.

It would be far more interesting and real if this tore them apart.  I guess I just hate the soap opera trope that always sticks gay characters with kids in the belief that’s all everybody really wants — when not everybody does.   And there’s nothing wrong with that.

I can think of a dozen stories for a gay couple that don’t involve cheating or children.  Shame the show couldn’t be more imaginative.

Emmerdale  (U.K.)

This drug storyline for Finn and Ross is dumb.  My guess they’ll be the worst drug dealers ever.

I had to laugh when Robert talked about Victoria having self-respect and that’s why she wouldn’t go back to that idiot Adam.  Cuz if Aaron had any self-respect he would have already kicked Robert to the curb.  Ross is right.  What does Robert have to do for Aaron to walk away? Forget Robert getting Becs pregnant, not even attempted murder is enough to keep Aaron coming back for more.

So Robert is going to pay because he said something mean to Aaron, not because Ross shot Robert last year?  Or all the other awful things they’ve done to each other?  Okay.  If the show wants these two to have a war, make it about something important.

Not sure what to think of this new Lawrence story arc.  But I find it hard to buy that Lawrence would go on the radio and give an interview.  That doesn’t seem like his style.  I did like he and Ronnie teaming up to handle Rakesh though.

Holby City  (U.K.)

Well that didn’t take long.  In fact, it seems rather sudden given last week’s episodes.  Was Lofty touched by Dom’s monologue about his friendship with Arthur because otherwise I don’t see where this crush came from.  And Lofty clearly has a crush on Dom given the dreamy looks he shot his way.   Even the little girl could see it!  I have a feeling though that Dom isn’t going to feel the same way and will reject Lofty.  After all, Dom is still recovering from his messy relationship with Isaac.  It’s way too soon for a new lover.  But I’m guessing it’s the first step of an eventual relationship between them.

Hollyoaks (U.K.)

Wow.  Hollyoaks proved me wrong.  I had my doubts about this suicide storyline, especially as it featured Scott, a character I’ve never liked.  But they knocked it out of the park.  The writing and the acting, especially by Ross Adams as Scott, was stellar.  The tape that Scott made before his decision to try and kill himself, was so sad and heartbreaking and powerful.   We saw a lifetime of Scott’s disappointment and heartbreak, which has played out over the past couple of years, crystallized in that moment.   Killing yourself never makes sense or is the answer, but we get why Scott would do it.  Kudos to the actor for playing a range of emotions in a very long scene where he had no one to play off but the camera.  Wow.

I thought Diane’s reaction was very realistic.  At first she refused to believe it and then she was angry at Scott for doing it.  Still, Diane clearly doesn’t understand.

I’m glad the show took the time to point out how prevalent suicide is among the gay community.  And did I mention how cool is it they have a gay muslim in the cast?

I also liked that the show addressed that even among other gays it’s hard to be femme and flamboyant because not only does the straight folks reject you, but the gay community does as well.   So much of that rang true.  James’ scene with Mercedes where he talked about be forced to be ‘straight-acting’ was strong.

I do hope we get to see Scott grow and change and be more fleshed out after this story.  And I hope he does find love, someone who accepts him the way he is.  Can’t believe I’m saying that about a character I’ve always wanted gone.

I’d forgotten that Esther tried to kill herself back in the day.   Glad the show didn’t forget that history.

I’m tired of Harry whining about Ste.  So very tired.

Why is it in these closet case stories the guy in the closet ends up smacking his secret lover around?  This show has done it before, too many soaps have done it before.  I’m tired of it.  I’m even more tired of gay men continuing to pursue these jerks and fans cheering this crap on.  I hope that this doesn’t wind up with Kyle and Ryan back together once the secret is out and Kyle is out of jail.  But I wouldn’t put it past this show to go there. Just once I want to see the other guy pop his closeted lover back. Please!

  • Dom’s drug addiction spins out of control on Holby City and Lofty comes to his rescue.  A friendship blossoms between the two of them, but will it lead to more?

All this, plus more clips, spoilers and teasers!

PICKS AND PANS

Casualty  (U.K.)

I know Scott is a racist murderer, but his ass looked sweet in those tight jeans.  Damn.

I found much of the events of this episode to be kind of unbelievable.  Just for their own protection, the hospital Ethan wouldn’t have been allowed to treat Mickey.  Too much liability.   The subplot with the Middle Eastern woman and her daughter was so heavy handed and pointless.  It just seemed like a distraction to all the truly tense dramas playing out.  I think the show would have been better served to go with a completely unrelated story.  But it was nice to see the young woman who played Phoebe on Hollyoaks.   I liked her.  Still annoys me that HO killed her like they did.

I also, given the history, can’t believe Scott can just walk around the hospital like he did.  Security can and should have thrown him out.  I guess the story isn’t over yet.  I don’t think Ethan is going to let this go.  And well, Scott has some big ones given the attitude he showed in this clip.

Does Mickey really believe that Scott is innocent or is he covering for his brother?   And I wish we were seeing more of Mickey and Jez as a couple.  We’re clearly supposed to believe they care deeply for each other.   But I’d like to know why Jez would take such a huge risk with his life and at work to date someone who brings so much baggage to the table.  Mickey’s cute and all, but what else does he bring to the table besides a great head of hair?

Clearly the show is setting up for a major explosion with the reveal of Mickey being gay, his relationship with a black man and the truth about Scott having killed Cal.  And I just don’t see this ending well for anybody involved.

Emmerdale  (U.K.)

What is this show doing with the Barton family?  They used to have great stories for them, especially Ross, but Emmerdale really seems to have lost interest in doing anything good with them.  Both Finn and Ross are still oddly single and Pete is involved in the dumbest love triangle.  Terrible.

Who doesn’t check their account regularly?  Nobody in this day and age.  I find it very hard to believe Emma hasn’t looked at her account since James died.  Nope.  In fact, none of these people are checking their business or personal accounts on a regular basis.  There are other ways to tell this story without making everyone seem dumb.  Then again, given that this plot point is so out the blue, probably not.

Leyla was totally out of line breaking Finn’s confidence.  I’d never trust her with anything.

Finn turning to prostitution to make money could be an interesting storyline with all sorts of drama and complications.  Too bad the show chose not to pursue it.  It would be a lot better than what they are choosing to do.

I liked the scene where Ross came to Finn’s rescue, but finding a drug empire in their backyard?  Please.  And Ross talked about not doing something stupid, but trying to cash in on a situation like this asks for the foolishness they’re about to put themselves in.  I mean, do they really think these dealers won’t come back for their stuff?

Holby City  (U.K.)

Seems to me we’ve seen more of Dom’s grieving Arthur than we have had of Morven doing the same.  But then the show always spent more time on Dom and Arthur’s relationship than they did with Arthur and Morven.  I always kind of felt like his relationship with her was thrown in without a lot of thought.

Could the show be more obvious that they’re going to pair Dom and Lofty?  These scenes are designed to go in that direction, especially with Dom saying things like ‘we’re never going to mean anything to each other.’  If that’s not the start of a love story I don’t know what is.

I’m not sure how I feel about it.  I can’t see much chemistry between the two guys yet.  And it would be nice if the show wouldn’t pair them simply because they’re the only two gay men on the canvas.   But TV doesn’t work that way.  So it’s inevitable.  Lofty certainly is different from Dom’s previous lovers so there’s that.  I just hope the show takes their time and doesn’t rush it.

Hollyoaks (U.K.)

I really don’t care about Ste or his problems.  I wish he would go away and disappear for good.   How can he keep having violent blackouts, but he’s sure he didn’t kill Amy?  But I did like Darren’s Wentworth Miller comment.  Tony did the right thing by calling the cops on Ste.  Harry is willing to throw his life away for this loser and thank God Tony stopped him.  Tony should have never approved of this relationship in the first place.  Everything Tony warned Harry about a relationship with Ste turned out to be right.

So is Ryan in denial about his bisexuality?  That’s how it comes across.  Or is there more to it?  I’m confused about that plot point.

Scott needs to butt out of things that don’t concern him.  This is one of the many, many things I don’t like about this character.

Did Harry really think turning the drug dealers (while Ste is still in jail) was a good idea?  What did he think would happen?

I love that on the same episode where Esther and Kim break up, a new lesbian lands in town and there’s an instant triangle.   LOL!   But isn’t it completely inappropriate for Farah to be dating her patient’s ex-wife?  I mean, there are no rules against it, I guess.  But still…!  Oh well, at least Hollyoaks keeps bringing on new gays and lesbians and treats it like it’s no big deal.

In this week’s Gays of Our Lives….

  • Irish show RedWater takes keeping things in the family to provocative new levels with the secret desire between gay lawyer Keiron and his closeted, married cousin Andrew.  The two share a kiss, but will it stop there?
  • Finn takes on a new line of work on Emmerdale when he decides to be an escort to play the bills.  But will Finn be able to give his clients everything they want?
  • Nashville returns for the back half of its new season as Will and Zach get closer.   However, are they worth rooting for?
  • Rhys pays a painful price thanks to the fallout from the reveal of he and David’s affair on Rownd a Rownd.
  • Aaron and David’s relationship gets even messier when Tom comes back to Neighbours.

All this — and more!

PICKS AND PANS

Emmerdale (U.K.)

I don’t need to see Lawrence and Ronnie making out, but a little bit of affection between them would be nice.  I like the show having an elderly gay couple… I just wish they’d act like one.  Or are they still having issues about sex?  The show seems to have dropped that plot point altogether without ever really dealing with it.

I still think Aaron is way too forgiving.  He seems to have gotten past all this awfully quickly.  I think Lawrence was right when he said Aaron needs to get some self-respect.

I still stand by my belief that in the end Aaron and Robert will be raising that baby and Rebecca will be out of the picutre somehow.  Her character has been written into a corner somewhat has she has a limited shelf life.

I like Rebecca and Chrissie being close.  Or at least friendly.  The actresses work well together.

I LOL when Lawrence said he liked Robert because he was a good businessman.  We all know Lawerence was attracted to Robert and Robert used that to manipulate Lawerence.

Nashville  (U.S.)

I’m just not feeling Will and Zach as a couple.  I don’t think they have much chemistry.  I think Kevin was a better match for Will or that first guy he dated, Brent, back in the show’s early years.  And what about Jakob?  He and Will’s chemistry was hot and the character just disappered.   I know he’s coming back, but with Zach a regular now it looks like we (and Will) are stuck with him.  Zach as a character is fine.  I like that he’s a bit of a bad guy causing trouble at Rayna’s music company.  But he and Will aren’t doing it for me.

Neighbours  (Australia)

I thought it was so funny that Aaron complained about Mark ironing his metallic shorts because they’d melt and Mark replied ‘I’m not an idiot, I did it though a towel.’  LOL…  And I loved Tyler teasing Aaron about his dancing, complete with pelvic thrusts.

I guess they’re going to keep doing the misunderstanding thing with Aaron and David.  David thinks Aaron thinks bad of him for going to bars and stuffing money into strippers pants and Aaron thinks David thinks less of him for being a stripper.  And once that’s resolved then the Tom issue will come into play.  It’s the kind of stuff that soaps have been doing with couples forever.  It doesn’t bother me, but I’d like to see some forward movement at some point.

Tom literally went from telling Aaron he wanted to get back together to hitting on David after Aaron said he wasn’t interested.  He doesn’t waste any time.  This is getting messy with David dating Aaron’s ex.   Tom did say he’d be in town for awhile so this triangle looks to last a bit.  The show is clearly throwing all these obstacles in Aaron and David’s way.  It better be worth it when they finally get together.

Why would Amy push Tom and David together?  She knows Aaron and Tom used to date.  Her encouraging David to date Tom without telling him that salient point, makes no sense. I guess that’s going to be a big reveal down the line.

I did like Aaron lamenting that the only thing people want to pay him for his to take his clothes off and all his business ventures have failed.  It was a nice bit of character insight.

In this week’s Gays of Our Lives….

  • It’s not a shock on River City when Robbie and Stevie hook up.  And it’s not a surprise when addict Robbie turns to dealer Stevie for drugs.  But what is a stunner is Stevie’s secret and the life-altering effect it could have on Robbie.
  • There are lots of twists and turns for David and Rhys on Rownd a Rownd as David and Rhys’ affair is finally revealed to Dani.  But even with the truth out is there a future for the guys?
  • Hollyoaks revealed that Ryan is bisexual this past week, which oddly enough clears him of Amy’s murder.  If Ryan didn’t do it, then who did?  And why is James acting so shifty?
  • Aaron gets a job stripping again on Neighbours.  But is he any better at it?  Meanwhile, David wonders about his future with Will.
  • Plus, the latest on EastEnders, Holby City and Emmerdale!

All this — and more!

PICKS AND PANS

EastEnders (U.K.)

It was nice seeing Pam again.  I wish she and Les had of never been written out.  I’m glad she still considers Ben part of her family and wants to be close to him.  I hope her visit means Ben is going to finally move on.  Paul has been dead for a long time and Ben is young.  It’s time he met someone new and had a new romance.  I don’t need it to be Johnny, even though both Ben and Johnny need love lives.

Emmerdale (U.K.)

Robert and Aaron were supposedly on vacation, but those tans they have look really fake.  Very orange.

I like that Victoria didn’t try to pressure Rebecca to have the baby just because of her own issues about having kids.

Robert and Aaron’s bed seems awfully small for two grown men.

Seems like Aaron forgave Robert really fast.  But I guess that was for him to be hit with the baby reveal.  I’m sure he’ll get over it.  Once a man has tried to kill you and you stayed with him anything can be forgiven.

I think there was a lot of good acting by everyone for the double reveals.  Ryan Hawley and Danny Miller were excellent as always.  But this story is so lazy and predictable.  And we know that it ends with Aaron delivering that baby and Rebecca dying sometime afterwards so Robert and Aaron can play daddies.  Once she’s given birth, she has no purpose.  For some reason soaps always have to stick gay men with children.  That’s what will happen again.

At least the characters are showing some growth.  Robert told Aaron the truth when he didn’t have to and Aaron didn’t run out and do drugs or hurt himself after hearing that truth.  That’s nice.

BTW, whether she’s pregnant or not, someone should tell Robert you don’t grab and manhandle women.

I wish Rebecca was better written. Her character is all over the place.  The show has her changing motives and emotions depending on the scene.  I think trying to play her as a sympathetic victim is a bad choice and makes her boring.  A scheming vixen is much more interesting.  Certainly watchable.  But pick a path and stick with it, shall we?

Holby City  (U.K.)

Well, now that we know that Lofty is gay, I guess it won’t be long before he and Dom are circling around each other.  I hope it’s not for awhile though.  The last thing Dom needs right now is a relationship.

And I’d be okay if Lofty and Dom just became friends.  Dom hasn’t had a really good friend since Arthur’s death and a strong friendship with Lofty might be what he needs.  Unfortunately, TV doesn’t work like that.  If you have two gay men on the canvas they eventually have to start hooking up.

As for the story itself, it was perfectly fine, though nothing we haven’t seen before.  It was well acted by Lee Mead though.  I do like that UK shows can have gay/bi character on the canvas like it’s no big deal, sometimes several characters all at once.  US shows still struggle with having one.

Hollyoaks (U.K.)

So Ryan was having an affair with Kyle while Amy was being murdered?  I guess we should be shocked to learn that Ryan is bisexual, but not really.  When Duncan James joined the show, he was teasing that Ryan and Ste could wind up having an affair.  Sadly, that’s probably not a joke.  Every man in Ste’s orbit winds up sleeping with him.  Once the murder mystery is solved, there’s no doubt Ryan and Ste will hook up.  Why Ryan would want Ste is beyond me, but I say that about all the men Ste dates.

But Ryan couldn’t have loved Amy that much.  He cheated on her ALOT and already has someone new warming his bed.  My guess is there will be more ‘evidence’ that Ryan killed Amy and Ryan will have to come out of the closet in order to clear himself.  And was it just me or did Ryan look like he wanted to do Kyle right there in the alley when Kyle confronted him?

Speaking of evidence, did Ste really say he believed Ryan killed Amy because he had a bad temper and was prone to violence?  Has he looked in a mirror?   But now that we know Ryan couldn’t have killed Amy, that’s one more suspect off the list.  So who did do it?  I know the show has James acting shifty, but I don’t think he did it.  I think he just wants to frame Ste for the crime as payback for destroying James and John Paul’s relationship.  It’s not about Amy.

That bickering scene with Nancy and Darren about Kyle was really cute and shows why they are perfect for each other and should never break up again.  I also watched a lot of the Warren/Sienna/Joel story this past week.  It’s really well done.  I loved Sienna saying she knew she and Warren’s spawn would turn out evil so they could only hope for the best.  LOL….  And Jamie Lomas stays hot.

It’s a lite week this as many TV gays seem to be on vacation or in Days of our Lives’ case I ain’t watching until the new writing kicks in.  At any rate, here’s what’s up in this week’s column….

  • Aaron learns that David did hear Aaron’s confession of his feelings, but when a new man enters David’s life, will Aaron have made his move too late?  Find out on Neighbours.
  • On Coronation Street, as Drew draws closer to death, Billy learns that his godchild Summer faces an uncertain future, forcing Todd to reconsider his ‘no children’ stance.
  • James’ scheme to destroy his father causes Mac to have a stroke on Hollyoaks.  But James is only starting in his quest for revenge.
  • Jac plans to confront David about his affair with Rhys on Rownd a Rownd.  Will David finally come clean with Dani?
  • Plus, teasers and spoilers on Emmerdale, Holby City, Days of our Lives — and more!

PICKS AND PANS

Neighbours  (Australia)

The show really waited a full week to tell us that David didn’t have brain damage and that he did hear what Aaron said regarding his feelings for David?  That seems like strange pacing.  I did like that David realized because of his flirtation with Will that he needed to get out there and meet other guys and ‘see how this works’.   It was a surprise but as I’ve said before, I’m enjoying that the show is taking their time with the romance.  It makes Aaron and David more rootable if they have to work for it.

Paul really had all these off screen conversations about David’s love life?  It would have been nice to have seen some of this, but I did like the talk between David and Paul.  I’m enjoying their bonding and getting to know each other.  I suspect that we’re building to David starting to call Paul ‘Dad’.   I think I’ll like that.

Rownd a Rownd (Wales)

So both Erin’s father and his cop girlfriend she was going out drinking using a fake ID and they said nothing to stop her?  I mean, John even knew Erin was going to get drunk and just accepted it.  Not to mention Wil drinking alone at home.  I guess the culture there is very different.

Then again, kids here do the same thing in this country, but it’s just ‘hidden’.  But I did like the reveal that Erin was really upset and worried about Wil and Rhys’ legal problems and the effect it has on the family.  I know the show plays her as this nasty bitch and she is, but it’s great she genuinely cares about her family and is troubled she can’t help them.  Makes her a real person and not a one note character.

As for Jac and Lowri and their fretting about telling Dani, the truth is they shouldn’t tell her anything.  It is not their place.  They can and should talk to David and get the whole story and push him to tell her.  But they really shouldn’t be the ones to spill.

THIS WEEK IN SPOILERS

Coronation Street:  Billy finds out that Drew is getting sicker and he’s worried about Summer.  When it’s revealed that after Drew dies, Summer might end up in a foster home, Billy grows more concerned about the girl’s future, forcing Todd to reconsider his position about not taking on the girl.

Days Of Our Lives:  In Greece, Sonny and Paul get closer to tracking down Demois.

Holby City:   Following the end of his abusive relationship with Isaac, Dom has been taking some time off from work.  But he’s back and despite his denials, his co-workers can see how emotionally fragile he is.  Dom’s first patient since his return is a test of how troubled he is and he may have returned back to work too soon.

Hollyoaks:  As Mac grows more ill, James pushes Marnie to get him to sign a power of attorney, so she can run his businesses while he recovers.  Mac refuses to do so and decides to get a second opinion.  Before he can do that, however, he has a stroke and is rushed to the hospital.  Marnie fears she and James’ scheme to destroy Mac is about to be exposed and wants to stop.  James, however, threatens to tell Mac what they’ve have been doing unless she continues the plan.  Things take another turn when Mac has another stroke.

Neighbours:  David is surprised when Will asks him out on a date, given what happened between them.  Still, David agrees to go.   Meanwhile, Aaron tries to improve his career prospects.

Rownd a Rownd:   David looks to find a way to get out of Dani’s plans for a romantic getaway.  But he’s got bigger problems when Jac confronts him about his affair with Rhys.

TEASERS FOR NEXT WEEK

Days of Our Lives:  Sonny and Paul find themselves stranded on an island.

Emmerdale:  Aaron and Robert return home from their trip; Lawrence wants to know the truth.

Hollyoaks:  Kyle’s secret is revealed; Harry pursues a clue that could help Ste.

Neighbours: David is enjoying his romance with Will; an ex-lover of Aaron’s returns.

Rownd a Rownd:  As Dani’s health improves, David steels himself to tell her he’s gay.

That’s it for this edition of Gays of Our Lives.   Please share your comments on the thoughts and opinions expressed in this week’s column below.  See you next week!

DAYS OF OUR LIVES — Season: 46 — Pictured: Chandler Massey as Will Horton — (Photo by: Michael Desmond/NBC)

What has been long speculated is finally confirmed, Chandler Massey is returning to Days of Our Lives as Will Horton. Massey left the role in 2013 after winning three Daytime Emmys.  He was replaced by Guy Wilson, who was not well received as Will and the character was killed off by a serial strangler more than a year later.

With Massey’s return, it makes you wonder how they’ll bring Will back to life. But this is Days.  They did three return from the dead stories in a year so this should be no problem for them.  LOL…. The good thing is new head writer Ron Carlivati will be penning Will’s return so we should get a good story even though it’ll probably be completely implausible.  I’m prepared to roll with it to get Will back.

My speculation is that Wilson’s Will was an impersonator and that was the Will that died.  Massey’s Will has been held captive somewhere for a number of years and now he’s back — probably to interrupt Paul and Sonny’s wedding.  But that’s all speculation.  We’ll see what really happened when Massey’s first scenes air in September.

Now on with the column….

PICKS AND PANS

Casualty  (U.K.)

I’m curious how much time has passed between episodes.  Mickey still has his bruises from the fight and it’s obvious people weren’t expecting Ethan back at work.  So how long have Mickey and Jez been seeing each other where Jez would be so invested in the relationship?

I wish we could have seen the progression of their involvement, but I’m guessing the show needs to move things along so it can come into play into Cal’s murder?  That said, they do have chemistry so I’m looking forward to seeing more of them together.  I have a feeling at some point Mickey will have to decide whether to turn his brother in or not and Jez will be forced to choose between Mickey and his co-workers.  With all that and given that relationships on these shows usually don’t last, I don’t foresee a happy ending for them.  Don’t get too attached folks!

I don’t buy that Louise would set Mickey and Jez up given their history and that Jez treated her rather badly.  Not to mention the drama that would result when/if the affair was revealed.  And her choosing the hospital for the reunion and Mickey deciding that was the place to hook up with makes no sense either.  It’s clearly about plot and not about logical behavior.

I’m curious what the charge to the lifeguard would be.  The drowning was an accident.  Maybe negligence?   I’m sure the guy would lose his job, but would he serve a lot of time?  Maybe more for lying about it and subverting justice than the crime itself?

Coronation Street  (U.K.)

That was a really well acted scene between Drew and Billy when Billy told him he couldn’t take on Summer.  But I’m guessing Todd will change his mind and take on this girl.  If he doesn’t, there’s no story.  I hate it.  I hate that the only thing they can do for them is give them a kid.  It’s lazy.

Greenleaf  (U.S.)

Well, I figured that something would eventually happen between Kevin and Aaron.   And I wondered if we’d see anything.  OWN has gay characters on their shows and we’ve seen them in bed together (like on The Haves and The Have Nots).   But they’ve always been squeamish about kissing scenes.  Like here we see the guys on top of each other and pulling the clothes off but the camera hides the actual kissing.  I don’t get it.  Seeing two guys kiss is somehow more offensive than seeing them crawling all over each other taking each other’s clothes off?  I get the sense that’s the belief.

As for the story, I’m curious where this will go with the show comes back from it’s break.  I still think there will be a custody battle between Charity and Kevin and this affair will probably be used against him.  Then again, Aaron can’t really represent Charity if he’s sleeping with Kevin, can he?  Now that might be the dilemma.

BTW, is Kevin still going to those ‘pray the gay away’ meetings?  Last we saw he was taking that ‘medicine’ to help with sexual urges.  Guess it’s not working.

Hollyoaks (U.K.)

So James is doing this to make sure Ste goes to jail out of revenge over Ste sleeping with John Paul or is it because of his own role in Amy’s murder?  I don’t believe James killed Amy (why would he), but maybe he knows who it is and he’s okay with Ste taking the blame?  At least that’s how it seems.

I think Ryan and Mercedes would be a great couple.  If he’s the nice guy he seems, that’s the kind of guy she needs.  She doesn’t need to be so pushy though.  But that’s Mercedes.  I’m curious who this K is.  I think he cheated on Amy and that’s what ‘he did to her’.  I don’t think he killed her.

As for Scott, he expects this woman to be his mother, but that’s not what she signed up for.  There’s a reason why she gave him away.  And it’s just like him to intrude on her life and expect her to be everything he wants.  And he trashes her house?  Loathsome character.  I know the show wants up to feel sorry for him, by having his mom reject him because he’s a queen, but I still don’t care about his tears.

So I guess Kyle isn’t gay and he lied to Nancy?  Or was he just confused?  I know I’m confused and now Kyle just up and left.  But is he coming back?  The show did say he had ties to other characters in town.

Amazing that on last week’s shows, Hollyoaks had gays, bi-sexuals, lesbians and transgendered characters all on screen and in story. Romances and plots of all sorts.  It’s no big thing, this show has been doing it for years.  I wish other shows would see the light.

I will say though that the bedroom scene between Grace and Esther made me a little uneasy.  Esther is barely out of her teens and Grace has to be over thirty at least.  I know it shouldn’t matter, but it was very striking the age difference when I saw them in bed together.
